Here two versions of the Moon Harvest logo. Moon Harvest being a company that organizes events, mainly night-time events, such as concerts, parties &raves.
Both the english and chinese versions are our own creation. The english version came first, the chinese one needed to be equally catchy and to be so, in chinese it's best if it uses only two characters.
The equivalent for 'moon' was easy, a straightforward translation was enough but not so for 'harvest'.
The literal translation 'huo' did not ring so well and moreover the character wasn't simple, which is also an important feature.
Finally we settled for 'feng' which means 'aboundant, plentiful' but which it is often employed in association with 'harvest, crop'. It is also very elegant in its simplicity and easily remembered.
The meaning thus differed slightly from the english version, making it sound more as 'plentiful moon'.
This being a typical case of the flexibility that needs to be applied when translating western brand concepts into chinese. |
